B.sc. Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. B.Sc. Mathematics is a culmination of in-depth knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, calculus and other theories. It also explores related topics like Computer Science and Statistics. This degree course will help students in building a good foundation base for pursuing higher studies.

Pedagogy

Mainly we employ chalk-talk method as it gives time to the students to assimilate what has been discussed. We focus on Research based pedagogy and also encourage flipped class techniques. We believe that Mathematics learning takes place by individuals constructing it themselves in their mind with proper guidance. Cooperative learning is one of the better methods that helps students to master the topic which is encouraged during practical sessions.

Career Prospects

A degree in Mathematics opens lots of doors. Employers trust Mathematics majors for their smartness and ability to learn new abstract ideas. Insurance companies, engineering firms, software companies, the FBI, NSA, CIA, and schools all need and value people with expertise in mathematics. The pay ranges, job security is usually excellent, level of challenge and interest is usually good to excellent. Mathematics is a multi-faceted subject that emphasizes logic and encourages innovation. The ability to apply mathematical concepts and principles can be useful in virtually any industry. There are many options after B.Sc./M.Sc. few of which is listed below:

One can choose to pursue research (become a scientist) in his/her area of interest in Mathematics. And if one chooses research, he/she could go into the teaching sector as well. Research Institutes like TIFR Mumbai, IMSc Chennai, Harish Chandra Research Institute Allahabad, IISER Pune etc. offer good quality research for interested students.

After BSc Mathematics one can apply for M.Sc. enabling him/her to face the NET exam to become an assistant Professor. Attractive salary and lots of research are the two major incentives to the candidate.

 

Banking is another sector that one can get into with Mathematics.

If one loves data and Mathematics, actuarial sciences could be a great field for it.

If one wants to work in the private sector, one can look at these profiles.

Mathematics degree could also help one to work in the military sector. Scientists are always required to work with military and development (DRDO, ISRO, NAL, SETS, etc.). One could also join the navy as a Commissioned Officer in their education or logistics branch.

Differentiators

  • Gradual progress in the curriculum, connecting with what is learnt in the lower classes, which enables the students to comprehend the concepts with ease as their maturity grows through the six semesters.
  • Number of elective courses to choose from- discipline specific as well as skill enhancing, allows more options for students.
  • Skill enhancing courses are based on continuous internal evaluation and do not have end semester exams.
  • Students organises and manages intercollegiate Math competition and various mathematical games. This is an annual fest (MATHLETICS) generally organised in December to commemorate the birthday of Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
  • Various certificate courses are designed for non mathematics' students such as -
    • Basic Mathematics.
    • Three levels of certificate courses in Calculus.
    • Computational Mathematics.
  • Math Students are encouraged to take lectures for these courses under the guidance of their mentors.
  • Apart from teachers, senior students are encouraged to be mentors of students junior to them.
